  • Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells takes pride in her roles as a public official, bicycle enthusiast, sustainability activist, and mom. Mayor Sahli-Wells’ work toward making Culver City a safer place for bicyclists and pedestrians recently caught the attention of American Bicyclist Magazine, which featured her in its September issue (pp. 24-25). In the article, the Mayor talks about how she became an avid bicyclist and got into politics. She says she was happy to have the chance to highlight bike advocacy and car-light living.

Sustainability “makes our city more walkable and bike-friendly, helps to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, encourages healthy lifestyles, and is good for business too!” says the Mayor.

  • Greeley Wells enlisted in the Marine Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as adjutant, and was sent to fight at Iwo Jima. One of his jobs as adjutant was to keep the company’s flag with him at all times. It was the flag he carried which was raised on Mount Suribachi, the “first flag” that proceeded the famous image of the flag raising which has become a symbol of that war.

  • The Kirk Douglas Theatre celebrated its 10th birthday on Oct. 14, and Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells was on hand to recognize the legendary actor and the theater’s longstanding contribution to the arts in Culver City.

“I was very proud to present a commendation recognizing the great work of KDT and to say how the theater has been instrumental in the vibrancy of our city,” said Mayor Sahli-Wells. “Having a real successful cultural center in Culver City has helped make our city great.”

  • The Council recently discussed a developer proposal to install billboards along Centinela and Sepulveda near the 405 fwy. A major exception to Culver City’s billboard ban, the proposal would include controversial digital billboards, which have caused so many lawsuits across the nation.
In this clip from the meeting, I explain why I don’t support moving forward to study the proposal: “It’s clear to me […] that this is not in the interest of Culver City residents.”

  • Despite the very clear message from residents, the Council voted 4-1 to pursue a study to evaluate whether to install billboards along Centinela and Sepulveda near the 405 freeway.

  • On a 2-3 vote, the Council eked out a compromise between the traditional term invocation and the desire to use a term with no religious connotation: from now on, the Mayor will determine what to call this portion of the agenda. As your Mayor, I will use the term reflection. The next Mayor will be free to choose another term, and so on.

  • Culver City has a billboard ban. In fact, the ordinance removing billboards from within Culver City was passed in the 1990’s as an economic development tool to create a more beautiful and thriving city. The ban has clearly achieved its goal. Culver City has grown its economy and has become a “cool” destination city.

Now the Carlyle Group has offered to share revenue with the city if the Council makes an exception to the ordinance (10% of ad revenue, an estimated $420,000/year).

  • The City Council will talk about re-naming the opening portion of Council meetings called invocation. Should we keep the religious term? Change it? Words matter! Share yours with the Council.

  • Every pet should have its day. In Culver City the likelihood that day will happen was substantially increased on May 13 when Adopt & Shop, a one-stop adoption and shopping experience at 4235 Sepulveda Blvd ., had its grand opening.

  • Culver City residents will vote on a bond measure in June that will increase property taxes over the next 25 years to benefit school facilities.

Supporters of the measure, referred to as Measure CC, argue that schools have been neglected and require significant investment to ensure a successful education system.

  • Here in the Heart of Screenland, most of us are aware of the importance of the arts in our city’s history, present and future. My neighbors and I happen to live on one of MGM’s former backlots, and the homes around us are full of artists, documentary filmmakers, writers, musicians, producers, architects, etc.
