New Airplane Routes Over Your Neighborhood?

New Airplane Routes Over Your Neighborhood?

UPDATE: After receiving requests from residents, the City Council of Culver City, Congressmember Karen Bass & the LAX Noise Round Table, the FAA has extended the public comment period to September 8, 2015.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is re-designing flight paths all over the country in a project called NextGEN. They’ve just released the Environmental Assessment document for Southern California, and are giving communities 30 days to comment on the proposed changes.

Over the past two to three years, I’ve received increasing complaints about airplane noise, and have personally noticed louder planes over my home as well. In response to these complaints, the city of Culver City has hosted a special community meeting, added “Overflight Noise” to its app for reporting issues, is working with our Congressmember Karen Bass, and is collecting input on overflight noise which will be shared with LAX and the FAA.

Councilmember Jim Clarke and I recently attended an FAA meeting presenting NextGEN.

FAA staff showed us an example of the newly-designed airspace over Phoenix, AZ. From a community perspective, it became clear that there are winners and losers in this program. As shown in the illustration below, the flight paths are narrowed, but the volume of flights is the same (further, there’s a good chance they will increase in the future). Overall, less neighborhoods will experience overflights, however, those who live under the new flight paths will have to endure nearly every plane that serves the airport.

NextGEN Over Phoenix

The city of Phoenix is suing the FAA over these impacts.

Culver City will be submitting comments, and wants to be sure our residents have the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns about the NextGEN program and existing overflights before any changes are made. You may share your input with the city (click here for options), or to the FAA itself.

To learn more about NextGEN directly from the FAA, and ask FAA representatives questions, they are holding a series of public workshops. The workshop closest to Culver City takes place :
