On a 2-3 vote, the Council eked out a compromise between the traditional term invocation and the desire to use a term with no religious connotation: from now on, the Mayor will determine what to call this portion of the agenda. As your Mayor, I will use the term reflection. The next Mayor will be free to choose another term, and so on.

The large majority of the people who spoke and wrote on the issue expressed the desire to remove the term, respecting the separation of Church and State – or Church and City as Councilmember Jeff Cooper put it.

Speaker Carlene Brown said we need “freedom of religion and from religion.” I agree.
